Silver lining for Lin in team event after individual blow

TWO representatives of the Wotton-based EWSKA Karate Club have been competing at the fifth World Karate Championships.

Sensei Bert Harris (third Dan) and Lin Harris (first Dan) were both part of the EWSKA national squad that competed in the championships in Serbia.

The pair were both unlucky to miss out on a place in the final of their individual Katas, each going out by 0.2 of a mark.

However, the ladies team, of which Lin was part of, claimed the silver medal in the final after coming top in the qualifying round.

Bert Harris told the Gazette: "The standard of competition was stunning and a step up for all of us in the squad, so to miss out by 0.2 of a mark was very frustrating for both of us.

"But having been Lin's instructor since she started Karate four and a half years ago, it has been fantastic to see the progress she has made.

"To be competing and winning medals on an International level in such a short space of time is an amazing achievement.

"I am sure that a World Champion medal is merely a matter of time away."

The club train every Wednesday at the British School, Wotton-under-Edge (Children 6-7pm, Adults 7-8pm). New students are always welcome. Call Bert Harris on 07966 525795 for more information about the club.
