Avon Netball League Division One Phoenix 38 Bristol Saracens 44

PHOENIX failed to capitalise on a great start and were left wondering how their opponents had taken victory.

Relegated last season, Bristol Saracens were something of an unknown quantity but Phoenix started superbly and finished the opening quarter five goals up. By half-time the lead had been increased to seven goals, although Saracens were still very much in the game.

The Bristol side swapped their goal shooters after the break and the new shooter had a distinct height advantage over the Phoenix goal keeper.

With accurate passing, Phoenix could not stop the Saracens supplying their shooter with regular opportunities and the lead was whittled away.

By full-time Saracens had turned the seven-point deficit into a 44-38 win, leaving Phoenix rather stunned.

A combination of injuries, lack of fitness and a simple lack of height had conspired against Phoenix, who are determined to make amends in the return fixture on March 25.

Goal defence Clare Peevers was voted player of the match for Phoenix.
