Jack's the lad at Synwell

TWO Synwell Amateur Boxing Club fighters had mixed fortunes at the Malmesbury ABC annual boxing dinner show in Chippenham.

Twelve-year-old Jack Andrews boxed his way to a unanimous points decision but senior heavyweight Jimmy Stanulewicz found things tough in his bout and was retired by the doctor after just one round.

Andrews was matched against King Alfred ABC's Ricky Hicks.

Fresh and confident after his recent win in Newport, Andrews met his opponent in the centre of the ring, where several introductory punches were exchanged as neither boxer wanted to back away.

Hicks, the more mobile of the pair, tried to control the bout from distance but Andrews crowded his opponent in an even first round.

The second round saw Andrews turn the pressure on, forcing Hicks into the corner of the ring, where the Synwell fighter began to score more freely to head and body, while Hicks occasionally scored with overhead rights to the head.

The third round saw Hicks coming out of the corner knowing that the bout was slipping away from him.

Meeting Andrews in the centre of the ring, it was not long before the Synwell boy's strength began to show, dominating with clean shots to the head. The result was a unanimous points victory to Andrews.

It was then the turn of senior heavyweight Stanulewicz and his opponent David Jenvey from Droitwich ABC.

From the outset of the first round it was obvious that Stanulewicz was not at his best.

Surging forward and driving his opponent onto his back foot, the Droitwich man threw straight punches to the head that connected with the target with apparent ease.

The Synwell man's hands, although held high, held no protection from the onslaught and he continued to be punished until the end of the round, where he emerged bleeding heavily from the nose together with a large swelling under his left eye.

The referee stepped in and called the doctor to ringside for him to examine the eye. As a result, the referee stopped the contest, declaring the Droitwich boxer the winner.
