Tremendous Town conquer the Hill

GFA North Senior Amateur Cup Round Three Warden Hill United 0 Dursley Town 1

A SECOND half goal from Will Steel gave Dursley victory at Warden Hill.

Town had to switch the cup tie against the side from a division above them in the Northern Senior League because of a waterlogged Rec but the 1-0 win was the least that they deserved.

Dursley dominated for long periods and should well have won by a bigger margin than they did.

The visitors created most of their chances in the first half but poor finishing let them down and the game remained goalless at the break.

Town player-manager Martin Booth was one of the offenders, ballooning a shot over from six yards after he got on the end of a Rich Gillingham free-kick.

Ian Beevor also wasted a chance inside the penalty area, while the lively Anthony Nash worked the goalkeeper on a couple of occasions.

Warden Hill are a shadow of the side that won the Northern Senior League in 2003/04 and they rarely threatened to break down the visitors' defence.

The home side did offer more of a threat in the second half but Dursley remained in command.

The goal eventually arrived midway through the second half.

Booth released Nash with a great through ball and, after cutting inside a defender, the diminutive forward forced the goalkeeper into a parry that gave Steel a tap-in.

Going behind failed to prompt United into making a better fist of things and it was Town that could have added to the scoresheet before the end.

They forced a number of corners but had to settle for the one-goal margin.

Booth told the Gazette: "We were quite comfortable, really. It should have been more than 1-0.

"Anthony Nash was outstanding today and our squad in general is looking very strong now.

"I have about 18 players I can call on now and hopefully we can go on a good run in the league to match our cup form.

"We can't complain about our place in the league because we dropped some really silly points earlier in the season but we are playing much better now."
