Objections lead to refusal of planning

PLANNERS at Stroud District Council have refused planning permission for a new housing development in Dursley.

At Tuesday's meeting of SDC's development control committee, members agreed that the application for the erection of one terrace block of three houses and one terrace block of four houses at land on 36 and 38 Rosebery Road should be refused.

The application was a resubmission of an earlier application, which was withdrawn by the applicant.

The plan received 11 letters of objections from neighbouring residents citing noise and pollution problems, access for emergency vehicles, lack of car parking and loss of views and privacy as reasons why the application should be refused.

Dursley Town Council objected on the grounds that the current road capacity and infrastructure was insufficient to support such a development and that the number of houses planned would be over development.

The application was recommended for refusal by planning officers at Ebley Mill.

Ian Gobey, the council's development control manager, said: "The decision for this application is recommended purely on highway grounds. That view is supported by the town council."

Cllr John Jones (Cons, Severn) said: "Anyone who knows that area would see that it is a no go for that number of houses in that road."

Cllr Janet Wood (Independent, Coaley and Uley) said: "I don't feel it is suitable to be redeveloped. I am surprised it is just a highway refusal because there are plenty of objections."

Cllr Dennis Andrewartha (Lib Dem, Cam West) said: "I am one who advocates in-fills but only where there is a definite benefit. The problem is with Rosebery Road is it is a highly congested avenue.

"The road can't take it and there is plenty of evidence to that effect. The development isn't right for that area."
