Stay safe - don't drink and drive

GLOUCESTERSHIRE'S emergency services are working together to encourage more responsible and safer driving with a fun non-alcoholic cocktail.

Last Tuesday police, fire and ambulance services, in conjunction with a local drinks company - The LoNo Drinks Company - served up their own selection of tasty non-alcoholic cocktails at Cirencester Fire Station with a very strong road safety message.

The idea is to promote the fact drivers can still have fun whilst acting responsibly during the festive season.

Four simple points are being highlighted: If you are having a New Year's Eve party be a responsible host. Provide alternatives to alcohol for your guests Never offer a driver an alcoholic drink If you drive, don't drink

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Chris Griffin, who is working with the Gloucestershire Road Safety Unit, said: "Christmas should be a fun and exciting time of the year. Drinking in moderation and not at all when driving will ensure it stays that way"

Insp John Pickersgill, from Gloucestershire Constabulary's Traffic Division, said: "Don't drink and drive. Whenever people go out and alcohol is being consumed there should always be a nominated driver to ensure everyone gets home safely".

Kevin Dickens, community operations manager for Gloucestershire Ambulance Service, said: "It is important to pre-plan your journey home not only during the festive period but all year round. Book your taxi for a set time, use public transport or stay at a friend or relatives.

"If you have a designated driver you must respect that they are driving and it is important to enable them to concentrate on their driving. Being a passenger under the influence of alcohol can also be a distraction, which could result in a road traffic collision.

"It is also important to remember that you may still be under the effects of alcohol the following morning so if you have any doubts or concerns don't drive".
