Leaders well beaten

Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two Charfield 3 Newton Heath 0

CHARFIELD stunned Division Two leaders Newton Heath to notch their most impressive league win of the season.

The home side even overcame the loss of goalkeeper Craig Luker, who fractured an arm and had to come off at half-time.

It was 2-0 by that time though.

After Newton Heath looked more dangerous initially, Charfield got into the game and took the lead midway through the first half.

Lee Forristall crossed for centre half Jim Williams to power in yet another headed goal.

Shortly before half-time the home side scored a second when Alex May slammed in Williams' knock down from a Forristall corner.

Paul Eldridge took over in goal in the second half and did everything that was asked of him, though he was protected superbly by his defence and sweeper Phil Ashpole in particular.

May struck the post for Charfield as they looked for a third, which eventually came eight minutes from time when Lee Harper converted man of the match Forristall's cross.

Charfield manager James Thompson said: "The team spirit and work rate in this game and over the past month or so has been superb.

"Playing like this, we could climb the table further."
