Release potted potential

POTS of Potential is an exciting new venture set up by Rose Chalmers from Wortley, near Wotton-under-Edge.

Aimed at people who would like to combine a sociable, relaxing occasion with producing an individual personalised present for a friend or relation, Pots of Potential organises pottery painting sessions.

Rose said: "My working background is with children in nurseries, but I have an A Level in Art and had never used it - this move helps me mix both interests."

She attended a pottery painting course in Hampshire in February last year, and set up her own business soon afterwards.

The majority of people taking part in the sessions so far have been children, painting plates, cups and bowls which Rose fires in her own workshop kiln. New parents are also invited to preserve their baby's footprint or handprint on a special piece of pottery.

Couples embarking on a new married life together can choose a vase or plate to have at their wedding which will be signed by all the guests - Rose will take the piece away to be fired.

She said: "More adults are realising the attraction of painting pottery - you don't need to be artistic, in fact simple designs are often the best and most effective.

"Taking part can be really therapeutic and relaxing, and satisfying too because you end up with a special pot."

Pots of Potential has the flexibility of being a mobile or fixed service - Rose can run sessions at schools, Brownie groups, art groups or other places; but she also holds pottery parties, and her forthcoming 'coffee and paint mornings' at her home workshop.

On Saturday, April 1 (2.30-4.30pm) Rose will be at Under The Edge Arts in the Chipping Hall, Wotton-under-Edge running a family Easter workshop as part of the arts centre's new winter/spring programme.
