Outstanding Wotton give Tetbury a scare

Gloucestershire League Division Three South Wotton-under-Edge 22 Tetbury 40

WHILE Wotton may have lost to Tetbury by 18 points, the Men In Black produced easily their best display of the season against an excellent side.

In their last league game, Tetbury ran in 128 points against St Brendans and they had not conceded more than seven points in any game.

However, after their 40-22 win at Wotton, Tetbury coach, former Welsh international Mark Ring, admitted that his side had been given easily their biggest test of the season.

The battle began with the Wotton front five of Pagett, Weston, Holcombe, Brown and Smith dominating the set pieces.

James Needs was exceptional in the lineouts, giving Wotton a steady platform for their attacks.

The game started predictably enough, with Tetbury pressing and taking an early lead, which grew to 25-7 by half-time. Wotton's try came from a Will Driver kick, chased down by Weston.

The home side took stock at half-time and what followed was arguably the best ever half of rugby in Wotton's short history.

Wotton scored three tries, with Tetbury's replies coming only from breakaways resulting from errors.

Rob Marlow finished things off after a steamroller of a maul had made great progress, Robin Drake collected a Tim Brown grubber kick for another score and Holcombe's offload to captain Brown gave Wotton their last try.
