Residents put to test

CAM and Dursley residents will be put to the test as part of a pilot project to promote adult learning throughout Britain.

The national Test the Town campaign hits the area this month and a range of promotional events are being planned.

Organisers hope it will encourage people to work towards national tests in English and mathematics and improve confidence and prospects in the area.

The events follow an 18-month Learning Community project to improve key skills in the area after a health check survey of employers, residents and young people and the decline of local industries.

Organisers hope it will dispel myths about adult learning.

Jane Manning, project manager of the Learning Community, said: "Our hope is to get people to recognise that these qualifications are for everyone and not just those who can't read or write.

"My daughter is at school and when I came to help her with her homework, I found that I could not do it.

"I started one of the courses and it improved my skills immensely."

Backers of the Learning Community hope to encourage people at an open event on Saturday, February 25 (9am-1pm) at Dursley's farmers' market in the town hall. At the event people will be able to try multiple choice questions on computers and learn about the benefits of adult learning.

Courses may then be set up in the area if there is enough local interest. These would help people work towards level 1 or 2 national qualifications.

Adele Summerill(corr),47, of Cambridge Avenue, Dursley, said: "I have already got qualifications but think this is a really good idea.

"Several years ago I went back to college to learn about computers so I could keep up to date with my daughters. I'd recommend adult learning to anyone."

Local MP David Drew and teachers from Rednock School will also take the tests in separate events.

John Waldron (corr), 52, of Nordown Close, Cam, said: "I think it's an interesting idea as it would be easier than travelling to Stroud to go on a course.

"I think people in Dursley will go along - I will."
