Top stars on way to castle

WHETHER you like rhythm and blues or classical music Berkeley Castle will be providing the backdrop for a weekend of live entertainment this summer.

Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins will be performing at the medieval castle in August followed by musician Jools Holland, accompanied by his Rhythm and Blues orchestra.

The concerts will be taking place in mid-August and organisers hope the two days will attract people from right across the South West.

Mathew Haynes, concert promoter from Excite Management Management, said: "We are delighted to be able to bring such high profile stars to the area.

"There are few things better than an evening in a beautiful location, with good friends and great entertainment."

Roland Brown, from the estate office at Berkeley Castle, said the two acts illustrated the growing popularity of the castle as a music venue.

He said: "We are delighted to host two big acts this year. We are trying to develop the meadow into a venue for top quality entertainment.

"We have had musical acts at the meadow now for five years and we are gradually building the profile."

Berkeley Castle is situated on the outskirts of Berkeley town and was built in the 12th century. The castle has been occupied by the same family, the Berkeleys, since its construction. In total 25 generations of the family have lived there for more than 800 years.

Katherine Jenkins will be performing at Berkeley Castle on Saturday, August 12 and Jools Holland will be performing on Sunday, February 13.
