Hereford/Gloucestershire Division One Stroud II 0 Wotton-under-Edge II 3
A COMPREHENSIVE win over local rivals Stroud secured the Division One title for Wotton with two games to spare.
The Blues completely dominated the first half with Stroud forced to defend in numbers deep in their own 25.
Wotton's relentless attack forced the home side to concede a penalty flick, which was despatched by Jim Cruickshank for an early lead.
Stroud defended gamely throughout and frustrated Wotton's attempts to capitalise on their possession and territorial advantage with Stuart Emms, Gary Davis and Pete Grey all being denied.
However, Darren Pearce provided one of the game's highlights with a superb turn and shot from the top of the D to make it 2-0 to Wotton, while at the other end Phil Dexter was called into action just before the break - leaving his line to deny the Stroud forward sight of goal.
The visitors continued to play good passing hockey and although Stroud did manage to win a penalty corner late in the second half, Wotton's defensive unit ensured that the hosts never looked like scoring.
Chris Price, Neil Curtis and man of the match George Eskins all caught the eye in the second half as Stroud's damage limitation exercise continued.
Pete Grey was once again denied on the line from a penalty corner, while cousin Mark missed a gilt edged opportunity following Andy Smith's penetrative run down the right.
Fittingly, captain and vice captain combined for Wotton's final goal with Davis slipping the ball right for Price to finish - with Pete Grey on hand to make sure from close range as the ball headed over the line.
