THE POOL will open, that was the message from Berkeley Primary School this week.
After weeks of uncertainty, the school's governing body has finally decided that the swimming pool will open for another season.
"The governors have decided we can open the pool this summer and we are taking the necessary steps to do that," said headteacher Martin Bragg.
There had been growing concern over the safety of the pool after a health and safety check revealed between £15,000 and £30,000 worth of modifications were needed to bring the public facility up to current EU standards.
At a public meeting held at the end of February school officials announced to a stunned audience of parents that without more community support the swimming pool would not open this summer and may face permanent closure.
For this season, however, the school has staved off closure of the pool.
Mr Bragg said: "It is looking positive. There are still some big issues concerning the long-term future of the pool but we have a list of people who want to help with an action group."
Berkeley parish councillors have also expressed their support for the pool at a recent meeting. Cllr Ted Holmes is forming an action group to tackle the long-term repair work and necessary fundraising.
Cllr Holmes said: "We are now seeing some progress. We have been charged with putting together a portfolio about the pool, which we will do as soon as possible. We need estimates and a better understanding the of EU regulations."
Debbie Burrows, clerk to Berkeley Town Council, said once a formal action body had been formed the council could act.
She said: "Once they have got the committee organised they need to get the facts and figures sorted for short-term and long-term provisions.
"At the moment the council cannot help because we haven't been given any specific figures."
