Win puts Berkeley in title driving seat

Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One Berkeley Town 3 Longlevens 1

BERKELEY TOWN put themselves in charge of their own destiny with a vital win over fellow title chasers Longlevens.

The Hunters still lie seven points behind Northern Senior League Division One leaders Broadwell Amateurs but have five games in hand on them and have the possibility of promotion to the County League in their own hands.

However, for 45 minutes it looked like Town would come off second best.

Doug Gray's side looked a little off the pace and fell behind after 25 minutes.

A Longlevens midfielder advanced unchallenged for nearly 40 yards before crossing for Danny Moore to score with a textbook glancing header.

However, manager Gray regrouped his troops at the interval and Berkeley never looked back.

Longlevens were overrun in the second period and were eventually pegged back in the 65th minute.

David Gibbs was penalised for handball and Ollie Clarke equalised from the spot.

The momentum was all Town's and they took the lead just five minutes later.

The visitors could not clear their lines from a dangerous ball in and Rich Langford pounced to put his side 2-1 up.

Shortly afterwards the game was secured by the home side when Clarke netted his second goal of the afternoon.

Berkeley ran riot thereafter and might have had more but the win was what mattered.
