Stage 3 glee for local schools

SCHOOLS in the Gazette area have been celebrating this week with the release of the Key Stage 3 league tables.

Headteachers at both Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire schools have praised staff and pupils for their school's results.

The league tables released this week are based on the results taken from the performance of 14-year-olds in Key Stage 3 tests sat last year.

In Dursley, Rednock School achieved higher than the national average in all three subjects tested. Seventy-six percent of pupils achieved Level 5 in English, 82 percent of pupils at Level 5 in mathematics and 81 percent of pupils reached Level 5 in Science. The national averages were 74, 74 and 70 percent respectively.

David Alexander, headteacher at Rednock School, said: "I'm really happy with the results, which will build a strong foundation for our students as they move on to key stage 4.

"I put it down to the quality of our teachers, who do so well despite working with poor facilities."

Vale of Berkeley College excelled as well despite not achieving the national averages in the three subjects. The Berkeley school was featured in the top 100 improving schools coming in at 73rd.

Aidan Farrell, headteacher at the college, said: "We are in the top 100 improving schools and it is good news for the school.

"We are really pleased with this acknowledgement."

South Gloucestershire schools were also very pleased with the results.

Brimsham Green School in Yate and Marlwoood School in Thornbury both achieved more than 80 percent of pupils gaining Level 5 in English, Maths and Science.

Richard Wawrilow, headteacher at Brimsham Green School, said: "I am absolutely delighted with the results.

"It is a tribute to the hard work of the teachers and students. We worked hard alongside the children to obtain these results.

"We now look to build on this years results and continue to improve for next year."
