Severn League Division One Dursley Ladies 1 Newent Ladies 3
DEFEAT at home to Newent on Saturday confirmed that Dursley Ladies would make an instant return to Division Two of the Severn League.
After a tough season, Dursley finally succumbed to relegation despite a whole hearted display against the league's second placed side.
Knowing that only a win would be enough to keep them in the top flight, Dursley bravely tried to adapt to a new formation, in an effort to win the game.
They competed well in the early stages but went behind after 20 minutes.
Undeterred, the home side continued to work hard and were rewarded with a penalty flick when a shot was blocked by a defender's foot.
However, with the pressure of the relegation fight on her, Sophie Hodgson had her penalty flick saved.
Already assured of promotion, Newent played some skillful hockey through the midfield but were left largely frustrated by some sterling defending.
Goalkeeper Sam Llewellyn made a fabulous stick save as the ball headed for the top corner to keep Dursley in the game.
Helene Jones, Jo Phillips, Suzie Martin, Jane Gardner and Aine Redmond gave their all in defence and, despite being a goal down, Dursley were fairly happy going into the break.
Newent stepped up a gear in the second half though and doubled their lead with a sweet strike.
They went further ahead with another fine strike following a short corner.
Despite staring relegation in the face, the home side's spirit was evident and they pulled a goal back through youngster Ayley Moir, who struck the ball into the roof of the net from Hodgson's cross.
Dursley forced a short corner in the final minute of the game but a win was not to be and relegation was confirmed by the final whistle.
Still, the ladies should be proud of their efforts to fly the flag for Dursley as they head towards their 20th season, despite not having training or playing facilities in their home town.
