Entertaining end to season

BERKELEY TOWN rounded off their title-winning campaign with a 1-0 win at third placed Broadwell Amateurs.

Tim Beames struck the only goal of the game in the first half of what was a hard-fought encounter.

Beames also struck at the weekend, giving Town the lead at Shortwood United Reserves.

However, having won the league in midweek, the game was all a bit 'After the Lord Mayor's Show' for Berkeley and United came from behind to win.

However, the defeat should not detract from what has been an excellent season for the Hunters.

Chairman Rob Evans told the Gazette: "Our success this season has not just been down to the players .

"It is also thanks to the committee members and, most importantly, our loyal supporters."

Berkeley's application to join the County League is currently being assessed and the club expect to hear back from the league by the end of the month.

Elsewhere on Wednesday evening, Sharpness lost an entertaining match 4-3 at home to Longlevens.

Lee Driver-Dickinson, Matt Frankham and Scott Young scored for the Sharks.

Dursley Town rounded off their league season with two defeats - 3-0 at Stonehouse and 2-1 at Mitcheldean.

However, both games saw Town players being played out of position - the Mitcheldean game seeing left-back Chris Wilkins scoring from central midfield, while player-manager Martin Booth and the equally diminutive Antony Nash played at centre-back.

Gazette area teams NSL finishing positions - Division One: 1st Berkeley Town, 4th Sharpness, 6th Cam Bulldogs, 8th Kingswood. Division Two: 5th Dursley Town, 9th Charfield.
