Vandals force SuperDragons move

10:50am Wednesday 18th August 2010

TWELVE of Newport's 15 vandalised SuperDragons are to be moved to safer sites, the city council revealed yesterday.

Three will be re-homed in the indoor market, two will go to the Riverfront foyer, while the Ffwrwm Arts and Crafts centre in Caerleon will also host two of the dragons.

Most of the new locations are near to their original sites, but are safer and closed off during the evenings, the council said. Some are being moved indoors, others to more secure outdoor locations.

It is not yet known whether the information on the maps, given to people taking part on the SuperDragon trial, will be updated.

The moved dragons are:

* The Seasons Drag On, which was originally at Tredegar House and is now at the Brewhouse Courtyard

* Recycled Royston, which was ripped off its base, was originally at the footbridge and is now located at the entrance to the Kingsway Car park

* Deano, which was originally at the bus station and is now inside the Kingsway Centre

* Draig Phoenix Guilin, which was originally at the footbridge and is now in the Riverfront foyer.

* Water is Life, which had its wing broken off at its original location near the Wave sculpture and is now in the Riverfront foyer.

* I'r Nefoedd (which means ‘to heaven’ in Welsh), which was originally located on High Street outside the Indoor market and is now inside the indoor market.

* Super City Dragon, which was split down its back on at its location between the Murenger Pub and Old Post Office on High Street and is now inside the indoor market

* Cenhinen (which is Welsh for ‘leek’) SuperDragon, which was originally outside the train station and is now on Mariner's Green

* Day of the X-rated, which was originally in front of the murals next to the castle and is now inside the indoor market

* Masquerade SuperDragon, which was at the castle and is now inside Barefoot shop on Charles Street

* Hope for the Youth, which was covered in graffitti when at its original Barack Hill location and is now on Commercial Street outside New Look

* Celtic Past, which was in Caerleon on the Goldcroft common and is now at the village’s Ffwrwm Arts and Crafts centre

* Pen Draig, which was at Caerleon, the Broadway, and is also now at the Ffwrwm.

If you have any information regarding the vandalism call Gwent Police on 101.

EDITORIAL COMMENT: Take pride in our Dragons

WE are disappointed that some of the Superdragons on the wonderful art trail in Newport are being moved but we fully understand why.

Newport City Council has taken the decision after some of the art displays were damaged.

Some of those damaged are now being put indoors or to new sites where they can be monitored on CCTV.

The key thing is that this move will not take away the enjoyment away for the majority of people in the city who are gaining such enjoyment from the Superdragons' presence.

It’s just an unnecessary hassle and one that has been caused by the acts of just one or two idiots.

Similar public art displays have gone up all over the country without any problems.

It’s shameful that this vandalism has happened here at home.

Everyone we have spoken to has expressed their fondness for the art pieces which are an absolute delight.

They have brightened up parts of the city and created a buzz and talking point.

Not only that but they will draw in visitors to the city.

That others can just try to destroy this work is a sad reflection on them as individuals. Let’s hope they’re caught soon and as well has having some swift justice delivered we’d like to see them given lessons in civic pride.

We hope the move means there will be no further incidents and the SuperDragons can be left in place until they can be auctioned off to raise money for charity.
