THE HORROR film genre has been a cinema staple almost since the dawn of moving pictures.

Hammer Horror was the name most associated with it in British cinema and a few years ago they relaunched themselves as a film studio dedicated to bringing thrills and chills to a new generation.

They scored well with The Woman in Black, but it is one of the more well known stories thanks to the success of the stage show.

Their latest offering is The Quiet Ones.

Professor Courtland (Jared Harris) is a scientist in the 1970’s who believes that a paranormal activity is actually caused by a human being’s negative emotion, rather than anything otherworldly.

To prove this he enlists the help of a depressed young woman, Jane (Olivia Cooke) who has forgotten most of her past, and around whom strange events seem to happen.

Courtland also enlists some of his students to help his experiment.

They lose their funding and relocate to a country house in the middle of nowhere to carry on. And like all good horror film plots, things start going bump in the night and everything starts going rather wrong.

The Quiet Ones is not a particularly strong horror film.

There are a few jumps and scares along the way, but it lacks the real hiding behind the sofa unnerving terror that really makes a horror film memorable.

The cast is very good, particularly Harris, but you wonder what they could have done with better material.

If you like horror films, then it’s worth going along to see, but there are some classics on DVD or online, that would be better value for money.
