ROVERS secured a magnificent three points with victory at their promotion rivals Grimsby Town on Saturday.

The day could not have gone any better with Conference leaders Barnet slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Wrexham, allowing the Gas to close the gap at the top to just four points.

The trip to Blundell Park looked tough, yet the Pirates produced a solid, committed performance with every player doing his job.

They also showed their mental strength by recovering from Matty Taylor’s first-half penalty miss to still win the game.

The players were not fazed by that setback, instead using it to drive them on in the search for three valuable points.

Earlier in the season the players were accused of not showing enough fight and buckling under the weight of expectation that comes from playing for Rovers.

But this team has come a long way since then and now looks confident and determined.

The balance of the team also looks good as we are solid at the back, carry a potent attacking threat and have the right blend of creativity and endeavour in midfield.

Those qualities were in evidence throughout the contest on Saturday as Tom Lockyer scored the all important goal, his first of the season, in the second half.

Boss Darrell Clarke rightly praised the players afterwards for their discipline, organisation and hard work.

With Macclesfield also slipping up, Rovers took full advantage by climbing above them on goal difference to move into second place.

It is vital now to capitalise on two home games coming up.

The Gas face Altrincham at the Mem, while Barnet face Grimsby. Hopefully the Mariners will do us a favour as they look to bounce back.

Then, on Tuesday evening, Braintree come to the Mem in a rearranged game.

If Rovers can secure maximum points from these two games and Barnet suffer another wobble, the league table could look very interesting.
