Windy service on the peak

OVER 300 people braved the wind and rain to enjoy the annual Good Friday service on Cam Peak.

The unusually early Easter break meant that the weather was cold, with showers of sleet and strong wind on the peak on Good Friday.

But none of this deterred faithful followers from 13 different churches in Dursley, Cam, Uley and Coaley, from joining together for a walking service to the top of Cam Peak where they leave the cross.

Groups from Cam and Dursley met at Gasworks Pitch and made several stops on the way to Cam Peak, each time saying a prayer and singing two versus of a hymn.

Francis Neale, secretary of Dursley and Cam Churches Together, said: "It is a very uniting event, we do not see it as several separate churches but as one united group during the service.

"It is a traditional event that has been going for many years and everyone enjoyed the service this year regardless of the bad weather."

Simon Helme, minister at Dursley Tabernacle Church said: "It was a tremendous day, there was lots of reflection and thought during the service. Lots of people find it a very meaningful way to celebrate the day."
