Police appeal after driver is assaulted

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a lunchtime incident in which a man was left injured following an altercation with the driver of another vehicle.

It happened at about 1.50pm on Tuesday, March 18 when the victim and his father were travelling in a white Renault Master van along Wotton Road in Iron Acton, in the direction of Yate.

They were travelling behind a black limousine and a blue Ford Escort.

The victim went to overtake the two vehicles, failing to notice a maroon-coloured Mercedes behind, which had already started to overtake the van.

The Mercedes was forced to take evasive action and had to move on to the pavement. The van passed the two vehicles and was then itself passed by the Mercedes.

Further on both vehicles were forced to stop at temporary traffic lights near Backfield Farm on Wotton Road.

The driver of the van and the Mercedes got out of their vehicles and there was an argument during which the van driver claimed he was head-butted and pushed to the floor.

He suffered a broken leg and a black eye in the incident.

The driver of the Mercedes got back in his car and drove off.

Police believe that the incident may have been witnessed by other drivers in the area at the time and have asked them to come forward to help with their enquiries. They would particularly like to speak to the drivers of the black limousine and the Ford Escort.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Staple Hill CID on 0845 4567000.

* The driver of the Mercedes was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released on police bail.
