Husk set for pro-am regional final
THORNBURY-BASED amateur golfer Colin Husk is preparing for one of the biggest tournaments of his life tomorrow (Friday).
The 65-year-old will play with Filton golf club professional Daryl Kelley in the regional final of the PGA National Pro-Am Championship in Cardiff.
If they win they will go to Europe's hottest golf destination, the PGA Sultan Course in Turkey.
Husk took his first big step towards the luxury five-day trip, when he won the Filton club qualifying competition with a nett score of 67.
And for Husk who has been playing for over 30 years, it doesn't get much bigger than this.
Husk has been practising three times a week for the big event, and although he doesn't expect too much from the tournament, he is quietly confident.
He said: "You've got to be confident, it would be great to go to Turkey.
"But the games are up and down, one minute you are alright and the next you can do anything."
Husk is a retired engineer who lives with his wife in Thornbury, and he plays off a handicap of 11.
Kelley, 31, has been a professional at Filton for four years.
For Husk, golf has always been leisure time, but that doesn't stop him from having a competitive streak.
"I just enjoy every game, but I am competitive," he said.
The tournament in Cardiff will be one round of better-ball medal play and the winning professional will receive £500, and there are valuable prizes for the top amateurs.
The winners of all 16 regional finals throughout Great Britain and Ireland will enjoy an expenses paid luxury trip to compete in the Grand Final held on the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club.
They will stay at the five-star Sirene Hotel and Beach Resort, between November 30 to December 4.
The PGA National Pro-Am is now in its 24th year and has an overall prize fund of £30,000 with the winning professional at the Grand Final taking home a cheque for £5,000.
