Stokes overcomes problems to record win
DURSLEY'S David Stokes and co-driver Guy Weaver stormed to victory at last weekends RDP Welsh Historic Rally.
The event consisted of 80 competitive miles on the Epynt Military Ranges, in the Ashmores, Cambrian tyres RS1600, but Stokes never had an easy ride to victory. At the opening 20-mile stage he had to stop three times when the rev limiter melted, and they had to drive very slowly out of the stage, dropping two minutes.
With the problem sorted Stokes set about pulling the time back with a string of fastest times, but a heavy landing on stage nine caused gear selection problems, which meant the gearbox was changed in service.
The service crew did this in a record time of just 14 minutes, and the Dursley driver cruised to a comfortable victory by 38 seconds.
The event was used as a test for Stokes. After early retirements in the opening two rounds of Historic MSA Championships, the current champion now goes to the next event in a few weeks time confident they have sorted the problems.
Coleford's Cliff Simmons was sat alongside Simon Tysoe in his immaculate Escort RS1800, and they were up to third overall, only to retire two miles from the end of the last stage with a broken Diff after a heavy landing.
