Cancun was nearly wiped out during the visit of Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 yet has risen resplendent and perhaps better than ever from the rubble.
Cancun holidays will whisk you away to the dazzling Caribbean shoreline of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The hotel zone is located along a narrow strip of land shaped like the number seven, nestled between the beach and mangrove lagoons.
It can get incredibly hot on Cancun holidays between May and September and the hurricane season usually falls between June and November, however due to its stunning Caribbean location, Cancun holidays can be taken all year round.
This modern day Cancun has a somewhat classier feel to it and although the colourful nightlife is still very evident, the hotels have a much more modern feel to them with better amenities.
Most of the beaches were wiped out by Wilma but sand has been pumped from the ocean bed to replenish them. The beaches and calm clear waters to the north of the region are perfect for family holidays while further south along the coastline the waves create excellent conditions for waters sports. Most beaches are closely watched over by lifeguards, and holidaymakers can hire inflatable's, kayaks or wave runners. Snorkelling is another favourite pastime in these waters or why not take the once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with the dolphins at nearby Garrafon National park.
Join a deep sea fishing expedition, a floozy booze cruise, or take a boat trip over to Isla Mujeres with its traditional cafes and arty shops from the many marinas along this stretch of coast. Scuba diving in this area will provide an amazing insight into the fascinating underwater world that thrives here, and the sleeping shark caves are well worth a viewing. Adrenalin junkies will love a thrilling speedboat ride through the mangrove swamps.
The Interactive Aquarium at La Isla will amaze the whole family with its tanks filled with tropical fish, sharks and dolphins displays.
For a fascinating history lesson a visit to the pyramid at Chichen Itza or the Mayan ruins at Calakmot will perfectly fit the bill.
Retail therapy is another wonderful pastime on Cancun holidays, with everything from designer boutiques to sombrero selling market stalls.
Hotels have some excellent restaurants in them however for a change of scenery try the Laguna Nichupte area, a freshwater lagoon edged with a fine selection of eateries and also a vibrant party scene.
All inclusive resorts on Cancun holidays attract people from all over the world, all throughout the year. Some come to sample the vibrant nightlife and carnival atmosphere, while others prefer to simply laze the days away on the wonderful Caribbean beaches. Whatever your reason for taking Cancun holidays, it seems that following the tragic devastation of that fateful hurricane, Cancun holidays have emerged even better than ever.
