LOCAL duo Minor Swing bring their own style of hot jazz to the Oldridge Bar, Kingshill House, Dursley this month.

Hot jazz originated in New Orleans in the early 1900s and took its name from its blazing tempos and fiery improvisations. Phil Harris and Matt Hopkins, have being playing together since 2006 and will take you on a musical journey through jazz. Whether playing hot club swing, bebop or the mellow tones of cool blues and bossa, this captivating duo will delight you with their unique sound.

Minor Swing is a band that allows Phil to explore his love of the music of Django Reinhardt. Phil began studying guitar at the Spanish Guitar Centre at an early age. He is joined by his ex pupil Matt Hopkins, whose taste turned ultimately towards jazz. Phil and Matt are delighted to have teamed up in this latest musical adventure, combining the broader influences of Matt’s straight ahead jazz with the fusion of influences that have been part of Phil’s life.

Minor Swing evolved from the group Café Nuage, a mainly classical and finger style jazz duo that Phil formed with Stuart Carter-Smith, now of Gypsy Fire. Minor Swing went on to tour extensively, including several trips to America, and has a list of high profile gigs to their credit from London to Los Angeles.

The gig takes place on Friday 24 October. As regulars will know, for those who would like to eat, there will be a home cooked supper served in the bar. The bar and kitchen will be open from 7pm with the entertainment starting around 8pm. There is no entry fee but the hat is passed around.
