FROM the Jam hit the stage at Gloucester Guildhall and gave the audience a blast of 1970s mod culture.

From the Jam is the most recent incarnation of The Jam, after bassist Bruce Foxton continued the group with guitarist Russell Hastings in 2007.

The performance at the Guildhall on Thursday, December 11, was part of The Setting Sons Tour.

The tour is a celebration of the 35th anniversary of Seeing Sons, The Jam's fourth album, regarded as one of their best with thanks to tracks like Eton Rifles and Little Boy Soldiers.

Though the lack of former front man Paul Weller is a blow to their appeal, From the Jam are still a force to be reckoned with, exploding onto the stage and channelling the "angry young men" image that partially defined the '70s rebels.

The decision to play the entirety of Setting Sons, as well as some of the band's greatest hits, helps frame the show and gives it a sense of a core.

The sequencing of songs guides the audience through different responses, raising them up and down and shifting their speed.

Bruce Foxton recently said: “The whole idea of playing an album in full has really taken off for us and has brought back so many great memories, they were great times for the band then and I love the idea of bringing that excitement and thrill back onstage.

“We will also of course play the hits and more to make what I think will be a great night.”

The electricity created on stage by For the Jam brought the atmosphere in the room to a highpoint, and often the crowd would gather together, hands above head, clapping along to one of The Jam’s classics.

The show was a sell out, and it isn’t difficult to see why. This isn’t a bunch of old rock stars desperately trying to cling onto something they once had. They still have it.
