LOCAL choir Philomusica begin their 2015 concert season at Holy Trinity Church, Longlevens, Gloucester, on Saturday March 28. They’ll be performing one of the best-loved of all oratorios, Elijah by Mendelssohn

Philomusica’s conductor, Linda Parsons explained: “Though Mendelssohn was a German composer his music was very popular in Britain and so the first performance of Elijah was given in Birmingham in 1846. It was an immediate great success and it has remained one of the cornerstones of the choral repertoire ever since.”

Linda went on: “It’s not hard to see why Elijah has remained such a favourite. It contains some wonderful arias and the choruses are memorable and often exciting. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to sing it in Holy Trinity church, especially as our performance will raise money for the church’s appeal for improved lighting. We hope lots of people will want to come along to support us and the church.”

Linda will conduct the Philomusica soloists and chorus and the organist will be Simon Bertram.

The concert begins at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Longlevens on Saturday March 28. Tickets cost £5 – accompanied children aged under 16 admitted free - and can be obtained in advanced either on 01452 506417 or from tickets@philomusica.org.uk. Tickets will also be available on the door.
