EVERY now and again, a new band comes along that makes you really sit up and take notice. Sunset Sons is such a band.

At first glance they are just another bunch of hipsters who are having a crack at the music industry. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that these boys - three Englishmen and an Aussie who live by the sea in France - really do have an extraordinary level of talent.

Not only do they combine great song-writing with raw, powerful guitars and intricate keyboards, they seem to have the ability to find that elusive hook in a chorus that keeps punters coming back for more. And given these surf dudes’ love of the sea, it was great to see them perform on a boat as they brought their own brand of rock to the Thekla in Bristol this week.

Already signed to Polydor, and with thee EPs under their belts, Sunset Sons comprise Rory (vocals/keyboards), Jed (drums), Rob (guitar) and Pete (bass). Together they bring a really catchy vibe that saw them earn a place on the BBC’s Sound of 2015 Longlist.

Singer Rory Williams not only has the look – the ubiquitous beard and hair combo that screams cool – he also has the voice to go with it.

Kicking off the set with three in quick succession - Know My Name, Come Easy and Medicine – it was a good their amps were turned up to the max to overcome the deafening screams from the teenage girls in the audience.

Crowd-pleaser No Way Home was followed by a new outing in the form of Disco Bands, as Sunset Sons powered their way through their 14-song set, while still saving the best for last. While there was little in the way of interaction, apart from the odd ‘Are you alright, Bristol?’, Rory captivates the audience’s attention throughout every song with his flamboyant keyboard playing, rounded off every time with a hands-in-the-air flourish as the crowd go wild.

Delivered with all the passion of a Killers set, Sunset Sons’ second half contains songs that just get bigger and bigger, as the admiring fans sang along to evey word of She Wants, Remember and my absolute favourite of theirs, On The Road. If you haven’t checked these guys out already, have a look on Youtube and Vevo, and I guarantee you’ll work your way through their videos one by one. Their recently released third EP, The Fall Line, is currently riding high in the iTunes chart, too . If you can’t get a ticket to this tour – which is already largely sold out – then make sure you give it a listen.

You never really lose the feeling that the guys would really rather be relaxing in a bar in the south of France after a hard day’s surfing, but hey – you can’t have everything!
