THORNBURY Orchestra gave a thoroughly enjoyable concert recently in St. Mary’s Church, Berkeley. An exciting programme, which included movements from The Planets by Holst and Pomp and Circumstance March by Elgar, delighted the large audience. The trombone soloist, Rhiannon Symonds, impressed everyone with her technical ability on the instrument at the age of only 16, and there was also a local composer’s rousing Symphonic Fanfare. The concert was held in aid of the Berkeley Church bell tower fund, and raised an amazing £1850. Altogether a great success.
Although it was not announced publicly, the concert was the last for the orchestra’s founding Chairman, Hugh Price. Hugh is one of three people whose idea the orchestra originally was, 14 years ago, and he has held the office of chairman since then, as the orchestra has grown and developed to its current strength.
His welcoming manner and his efficiency have helped create the orchestra’s very happy atmosphere, but he is now retiring to pursue other interests, of which he has many! We thank him for all he has done for us and wish him well for the future.
