These gigs at the harbourside are very special; especially when the sun is shining and the drinks are flowing. And the sold-out crowd certainly got their money’s worth, as Thursday’s entertainment started early with first support Joseph Cook taking to the stage at 7.15 for a very short but sweet set, gently easing the assembled masses into what would turn out to be a memorable evening in the sunshine.

Indie rockers Everything Everything have been nominated for an Ivor Novello award three times and were a perfect choice as second support, as they are currently vying for top spot in the album charts and single Regret is currently an MTV staple.

But it was headliners the Kaiser Chiefs who the crowd really wanted to see, and they started as they meant to go on with a high-energy set that just got better and better as the evening wore on.

The Leeds-based band got off to stirring start with opening track The Angry Mob, which was followed up by Ruffians on Parade, and front man Ricky Wilson incited the crowd to join in however possible – even launching himself into the crowd early doors.

The Voice judge has it all: good looks, a great singing voice, confidence, and the self-assurance to engage with the crowd on every level – ‘Right, Bristol, I’m gonna have words with you!’ Despite having a new album to promote, the Kaisers stuffed the set list full of songs that everyone knew and wanted to hear, including Everything Is Average Nowadays, Modern Way, Na Na Na Na Naa, Never Miss A Beat and big-hitters Ruby and I Predict A Riot coming back-to-back before the end of the main set.

A fabulous cover of The Who’s Pinball Wizard was followed by Misery Company and the final song Coming Home brought the main part to a close.

But it wasn’t long before the band were back on stage, bringing this second concert in the Bristol Summer Series to a tumultuous climax with a protracted version of ‘Oh My God’ which saw Ricky running back and forth from one side of the stage to the other, encouraging concert-goers to sing ever louder.

Whether perched on top of a rather unstable speaker at the front of the stage or frenetically shaking his tambourine, you certainly couldn’t accuse The Kaiser Chiefs of being boring, and if you had been expecting a repeat of George Ezra’s rather sedate performance last night you would have been in for a shock.

The Bristol Summer Series continues with Seasick Steve tonight (Friday, June 26) and Jessie J on Saturday.
