SEASICK Steve was the third – and now final act – to take to the stage as part of the Bristol Summer Series and he really made it a night to remember.

The sun wasn’t shining quite as brightly as it had been for the two preceding concerts (George Ezra and Kaiser Chiefs), but a few rain showers during the day couldn’t dampen the mood of those assembled to enjoy a night of American blues rock on the harbourside.

Seasick Steve became famous through an appearance on Jools Holland’s TV show and despite the release of seven albums still receives little airplay on UK radio. Despite this, huge numbers turned up to see him play to a packed audience.

Kicking off proceedings with an unusually raucous number which really showed off his drummer Dan Magnusson’s talents, the 74-year-old mucisian wasted no time before bringing on his ‘special’ handmade guitars with which to amuse the crowd for ‘Bring it on’.

It is truly amazing what a fabulous sound he can make with a guitar made from a washboard, banjo neck, Mississippi number plate and a thimble, but Steve has the crowd enthralled.

A huge screen at the back of the stage enhanced the experience for everyone, particularly guitar aficionados who wanted to see the great man’s fingers at work.

At one point, Steve goes into the crowd to pick a lady to bring on stage and serenade with a love song – let’s face it, we would have been disappointed if he hadn’t! – but it actually feels like every song is just for us.

With treasures such as Summertime Boy, Barracuda 68, and a great singalong of It’s A Long Long Way, an encore of Dog House Boogie saw the concert continue until well into the night, as the impressive two-hour set came to an end at 11pm.

With Jessie J having cancelled her gig tonight due to illness, sadly this was the last of the Bristol Summer Series concerts for 2015. It’s hard to imagine how the organisers can raise their game for next year, but we are all looking forward to it – that’s for sure!
