Troubled singer Pete Dohery popped out of his rehab clinic in Thailand today to join the rest of rock act The Libertines as they signed a new record deal, a decade after their last studio album.

His fellow bandmates Carl Barat, John Hassall and Gary Powell – who have reformed for shows sporadically after the group split in 2004 – flew out to join him in the Far East to seal the contract.

The Libertines released just two hit albums during their career before disintegrating as a result of Pete’s drug use. He is currently undergoing another stint of rehab to deal with his problems at the Hope Rehabilitation Centre, and he is starting a trust to fund treatment for other addicts.

The band, joined by Pete who was allowed out of the centre, and their management took a boat to the Thai island of Ko Si Chang to sign the deal with Virgin/EMI Records.

Carl said: “After everything we have been through The Albion sails on course again, I couldn’t be more excited.

And Pete said: “I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy. It was a beautiful day.”

As well as teaming up once again with The Libertines, Carl is due to release a debut album with his band The Jackals in February called Let It Reign.

Mike Smith, the president of music at Virgin EMI, has had a long-standing association with the group after signing them to their publishing deal in 2002, five years after they formed.

He said: “The Libertines started an inferno that blazed through music at the start of the 21st century and their reunion this year has been nothing less than spectacular. Carl, Pete, Gary and John are in the form of their lives and making some fantastic new music together.”

The band reunited in 2010 for performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, and they also played gigs in the summer including a headline performance at the British Summertime event in Hyde Park.
