Former BBC journalist John Sergeant says the corporation should try to keep hold of Top Gear star Jeremy Clarkson.
Clarkson is suspended while an internal inquiry looks into allegations he hit a producer on the motoring show in a row about food.
The presenter is a regular source of controversy for the BBC, but is widely regarded as central to the worldwide success of the hit show.
Sergeant said he had “a lot of sympathy” for Clarkson, but admitted the BBC were in “a very tough position”.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society Awards, he said: “It’s a bit like a marriage. They’ve been at it for a long time and it’s worth pursuing if you can”.
