He may be better known as the Pub Landlord, but comedian Al Murray has been making a move into politics.

He’s planning to run against Ukip’s Nigel Farage in South Thanet.

The well-known comedy star handed in his papers at the Thanet District Council offices in Margate, Kent.

And he’s not the only star to have dabbled in politics.

Austrian born Schwarzenegger became the 38th Governor of California in 2003, serving until 2011 on behalf of the Republican Party. He had a successful career as a bodybuilder before finding international fame in films such as The Terminator, Kindergarten Cop and The Expendables.

Former glamour model Price – aka Jordan – stood as an Independent candidate in the Manchester seat of Stretford and Urmston in 2001. She promised free plastic surgery for all, more nudist beaches and a ban on parking tickets. Her foreign policy was to give tax cuts to anyone having an affair with a foreign footballer. She won just 713 votes.

Andrew Michael

Star of Channel 4’s Gogglebox, Michael was axed from the show last year after announcing he is standing as the Ukip candidate for Hastings and Rye at the next general election. The Michael family, from Brighton, had been part of all four series of the show. Michael was previously a successful hotelier.

Wyclef Jean

The Haitian rapper tried to run for President of Haiti in 2010, however his bid was turned down as he did not meet the residency requirement of having lived in Haiti for five years before the election.

Glenda Jackson

The Oscar-winning actress is a member of the Labour Party and has been an MP since 1992. She will step down from her seat in Hampstead and Kilburn at the next election. Before turning to politics Jackson found fame in films including Women in Love (1969) and A Touch of Class (1973).

Ronald Reagan

Reagan served as the 40th President of the United States from 1981-89. He had previously acted in over 50 films and TV shows and was President of the Screen Actors Guild before starting his political career as Governor of California from 1967-1975.

Clint Eastwood

The acclaimed actor and director held the office of Mayor of the Californian town of Carmel-By-The Sea from 1986-88.

Notorious talk show host Springer ran for a seat in Congress in 1970, but lost. He joined the Cincinnati Council in 1971 but resigned after it emerged he had hired a prostitute.

Dave Rowntree

Best known for being drummer in Brit-pop band Blur, Rowntree has stood as a Labour candidate four times. As of yet he has failed to win a seat. He is chairman of the Labour Party’s London West End branch.
