Zig and Zag are set for a small-screen return for a new CBBC series.

The puppets, who made their name on Dempsey’s Den before heading to Channel 4′s Big Breakfast, will be back in animated form for the new show, Zig And Zag.

Broadcast reports that the puppets’ original creators Ciaran Morrison and Mick O’Hara will write and voice the alien brothers from the planet Zog, whose real names are Zigmund Ambrose Zogly and Zagnatius Hillary Zogly.

The new “bright and funky” run, which will consist of 26 11-minute episodes, is expected to debut in spring 2016.

In it, the aliens will be seen, making a new life for themselves in a suburb after crash-landing on Earth.

Zig And Zag marks the pair’s first return to children’s TV since they made The Zig And Zag Show for ITV in the 1990s.

In their heyday, they met stars such as Robin Williams, Michael J Fox, Ant and Dec and Emma Bunton.

The puppets, who released a single in 1995 after being signed by Simon Cowell, joined Big Brother’s Little Brother in 2010, and were commissioned to host a flagship Saturday morning radio show on 2FM called Smells Like Saturday in October 2010.
