It’s all gone Pete Tong for the Proms after the organisers of the classical music festival announced they have signed up the dance DJ to present a night of club classics.

The late night prom will be presented by Pete, a fixture on the club scene and Radio 1 for decades, and celebrates 20 years of the station’s coverage of the Balearic scene in Ibiza.

The 54-year-old producer, whose cult status has ensured his name has become cockney rhyming slang for “gone wrong”, said: “I’ve always been proud to be at the heart of dance music as it has continued to innovate and experiment and this is exactly what we’ll be doing in this Late Night Prom celebrating 20 years of programmes and live events from Europe’s dance music capital Ibiza.

“In this Prom, we are re-imagining some of the most enduring dance music tracks in the history of dance music and I’m very excited to help curate and guide that -as well as presenting.

“During the night, we’ll be re-working classics including Rhythm is Rhythm’s Strings Of Life and Stardust’s Music Sounds Better With You.”

BBC Proms director Edward Blakeman said: “We do now live in a world, thank God, where you can like all kinds of music, you don’t have to be rigidly siloed.

“If you can bring in a new audience and then touch them with the bigger proms message then some of this will rub off. This is about how we build audiences as well as doing it just because it’s good.”

The programme for the annual event, which runs at the Royal Albert Hall in central London, from July 17 to September 12, also includes a grime symphony featuring rapper Wretch 32, Family Guy star Seth MacFarlane returning for a 100th birthday tribute to Frank Sinatra and Sir Simon Rattle conducting a performance of Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius.

There is also a prom inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s Life Story series with the TV naturalist linking together scenes from the series with music that featured on the soundtrack.

Marin Alsop, who in 2013 became the first woman to take the baton for the Last Night of the Proms, is returning for the finale which also include a sing-along section inspired by The Sound Of Music.

Mr Blakeman said: “Marin, apart from anything else, is a fantastic role model for women and women conductors or women in music and its great to be able to invite her back.”
