British period dramas Downton Abbey and Wolf Hall have proved they are as big a hit in the US as in the UK as they featured in the 2015 Emmy Award nominations.

Downton Abbey earned a nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category at the 67th annual Primetime Emmy awards.

The ITV series became the most nominated non-US show in Emmy history after just two seasons, and after five seasons, the show has now gained a colossal 50 Emmy nominations and 13 wins.

Others nominated in the category include Better Call Saul, Game Of Thrones, Homeland, House Of Cards, Mad Men and Orange Is The New Black.

The show picked up further nominations in the major categories, for supporting actor (Jim Carter) and supporting actress (Joanne Froggatt).

BBC mini-series Wolf Hall also got a nomination for Outstanding Limited Series.

The costume drama, based on the award-winning historical novels by Hilary Mantel, will face competition from American Crime, American Horror Story, Olive Kitteridge, and another BBC show, The Honorable Woman.

Mark Rylance, who played Oliver Cromwell in Wolf Hall, got a nomination in the category Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie.

Game Of Thrones gained the most nominations, with a mighty 24 in total.

Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke are all up for awards for their roles in the show.

British drama The Missing, which starred James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor, also got two nominations – featuring in the Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special and the Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited series, Movie or Dramatic Special categories.
