Just how many times can Dwayne Johnson save the world?

It has just been announced that the wrestler-turned-actor, also known as The Rock, will star in Disney’s latest action-adventure-movie-based-on-a-theme-park-ride, Jungle Cruise.

The ride is set on a boat journeying to tropical settings such as the Nile, Congo and Amazon Rivers, encountering rhinos and hippos and piranhas along the way. And the movie is set to have a similar retro feel, inspired by The African Queen, the 1951 classic adventure movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, and with plenty of scope for a franchise like The Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Dwayne’s most recent flick – earthquake disaster movie San Andreas – has raked in almost £300 million at the global box office so far this summer, so it’s no surprise Disney want him to front Jungle Cruise.

But never mind his muscle, how will the 43-year-old action star find time, with a rumoured 10 other projects currently on the boil? Oh, and he’s currently starring in new HBO TV series Ballers about the lives of American football players.

Here’s a look at what other movies we can expect to see The Rock rolling onto our screens in over the next couple of years.

Shazam

Dwayne will play villain Black Adam in the DC comic book movie, after being offered the choice by Warner Bros between superhero Shazam and his arch-nemesis.

Dwayne has always been a fan of anti-heroes and said one of his favourite DC Comics characters is Black Adam.

The comic book movie is due out in 2017. It is not known if Black Adam will make an appearance in Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad in the meantime.

Furious 8

The Rock has played government bounty hunter Luke Hobbs in the Fast And Furious franchise since Fast Five and is set to reprise his role in the next instalment alongside Vin Diesel, due out in 2017.

Rampage

Dwayne will team back up with San Andreas director Brad Peyton on this action movie based on the classic 1980s video game featuring apes and monsters destroying cities, due out in 2017.

Moana

This Disney animation, about the daughter of a Polynesian chief who has to embark on a journey to find a mythical island, could be a quick and easy voice role for The Rock. Only as it is a musical, he is going to have to sing as well.

Dwayne is voicing demigod Maui who helps the heroine on her journey.

The actor joked he would be singing “manly and slightly off-key”. Moana is due out in 2016.

Central Intelligence (2016)

Also due to hit cinemas next year is this action comedy co-starring Kevin Hart, Aaron Paul, Ed Helms and Amy Ryan.

The film is about an accountant who accidentally gets swept up in the international espionage business.

Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon

Another project with director pal Brad Peyton, Dwayne is set to reprise his role as step-dad Hank in the latest instalment in this kids’ adventure franchise, this time set in space. The film is due out in 2016.

Journey To The Centre of the Earth 4

A fourth instalment of the children’s series is also rumoured to already be in the works, with Dwayne on board.

Baywatch

Dwayne will be joined by Zac Efron in the big-screen remake of the 1990s television series about California lifeguards, which starred David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.

With his vocal cords warmed up from Moana, could The Rock be in line to sing the theme tune too?

Big Trouble In Little China

The wrestling star is said to be in talks to star in and produce a remake of Big Trouble In Little China.

Dwayne would play Jack Burton, a trucker who finds himself involved in a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown, in the reboot of John Carpenter’s 1986 action classic, which starred Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall.

Alpha Squad Seven

Dwayne is really excited to be starring in this DreamWorks sci-fi action comedy set in space, not least because he will co-produce with Steven Spielberg.

Dwayne joked: “Can’t wait to create these characters for y’all – handsome, charming, ass kicking, flawed and slightly cranky of a hero leading the one and only Alpha Squad into space. And he may bring along some bald dude named Rock.”

Alpha Squad Seven is another potential franchise.

The Rock has never retired from wrestling, so with all these movies going on, let’s hope he doesn’t have to fit too many fights into his schedule. And don’t forget the gym Dwayne…
