Lizzie Jones’ rendition of Abide with Me – performed ahead of last week’s Challenge Cup Final – is climbing up the singles charts.
Jones lost husband and Wales international Danny Jones when he died of an undetected hereditary heart condition aged 29 while playing for Keighley against London Skolars in May.
A professional singer, Lizzie was invited by the Rugby Football League to perform the sport’s unofficial anthem on the field ahead of last week’s game between Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR at Wembley, and was given a standing ovation throughout.
And now, after support from the rugby league community, Lizzie’s rendition has been released as a single and on Sunday night was sitting at number 33 in the iTunes charts.
In the wake of Danny’s death a fund was set-up to support his wife and now eight-month old twins, Bobby and Phoebe, and its balance currently stands in excess of £230,000.
