Ridley Scott gave a tribute to his late brother Tony as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The director behind films such as Gladiator, Alien and Blade Runner was accompanied by Kristen Wiig, Russell Crowe and Salma Hayek as he was given the 2,564th star in front of the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles.

His director brother Tony, known for box office hits such as Top Gun, Days Of Thunder and Beverly Hills Cop II, died three years ago after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge.

“I dedicate this star to my brother Tony Scott, always my buddy and my partner. I share this star with him because I know he’s watching. Thank you very much,” he said during his speech.

Kristen, who starred in Ridley’s film The Martian, couldn’t resist making a joke at the three-time Oscar nominee’s expense at the ceremony.

“Ridley Elizabeth Scott, sir, congratulations,” she said. “Of course we are all here to celebrate and honour your incredible body.

“Also we are here to celebrate your work, your iconic legendary films and of course we have to mention your museum (Ripley’s) Believe It Or Not which is right down the street. We’re having drinks there. I think it’s like three bucks to get in or something.”

Russell – who worked with Ridley on Gladiator and Robin Hood – also gave a touching speech to the British director.

“Over the course of a director’s career if they had one iconic image that holds in people’s minds as soon as they hear their name then that would be a career of some significance,” he said.

“When you were talking about a guy like Ridley, you mention his name to people and the birth scene in Alien, the streetscapes of Blade Runner, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon going off a cliff in a car – I mean the images that he’s created over the course of his career and the adventures that he’s taken this cinema audience on have just been amazing.”

Ridley, 77, has been directing films for about 50 years now, with other directorial credits including Black Hawk Down, Exodus: Gods And Kings and American Gangster.

Ridley’s star is placed near the stars of other British entertainers such as Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Dame Helen Mirren and Malcom McDowell.

The filmmaker said: “I am truly thrilled to receive this star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside such talented artists in this wonderful business of ours called entertainment and I mean it.

“We are the luckiest people to be functioning in this business which is just great. That’s why I still charge along and do the best I can.”
