Chris Martin said he felt “down and confused” during his marriage break-up from Gwyneth Paltrow.
The Coldplay frontman is notoriously protective of his privacy but has opened up about his split from the actress and revealed he is very happy in his life now.
“I went through some big changes. Everyone knows about them,” he told Australia’s 2DayFM.
“[I was able to] figure out where I’ve gone wrong in my way of looking at the world. A few years ago I was in a low place in my life and was feeling kind of down and confused.
“Some friends gave me a book and a poem and those two things started me off on this whole journey where I just feel so happy to be alive.
“That may sound a little simple but I suddenly feel very grateful to be alive and if it’s coming across then that’s great to hear,” he added.
Coldplay’s songs have been the backing track to many a break-up, but the book and poem Chris turned to were Man’s Search For Meaning, Auschwitz survivor Viktor Frankl’s account of his time in the camp, and The Guest House, a poem by 13th-century Persian writer Rumi.
Chris, 38, and Gwyneth, 43, married in 2003 but announced they were “consciously uncoupling” last year.
They remain close to co-parent their two children, Apple, 11, and Moses, nine, with Gwyneth sharing a touching picture of Apple and Chris on Father’s Day in June.
While Gwyneth has gone public with her new relationship with Glee creator Brad Falchuk, Chris has been spotted with various women from Jennifer Lawrence to Peaky Blinders’ Annabelle Wallis, but hasn’t confirmed any romance.
