ONE of radio’s best-loved panel games is heading onto The Centaur stage with Jack Dee in the chair for 'I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue' on Saturday, February 21.

Cheltenham Racecourse will play host to the spin-off ‘greatest hits’ theatre version of the programme, which regularly attracts an audience of about 2.5 million listeners to BBC Radio 4.

Fans will need no telling that the programme, billed as “the antidote to panel games”, gives contestants silly things to do, such as singing the words of one song to the tune of another or charades without the benefit of mime.

Favourite games include Mornington Crescent, whose unfathomable rules have the contestants tying themselves in anguished knots, and Uxbridge English Dictionary where the panellists offer new meanings for old words.

'I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue' was devised by Graeme Garden (late of The Goodies) in 1972 as an alternative to another sketch show called I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again, which ran from 1964 to 1973. Jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton was the popular deadpan host of the programme until his death in 2008. The game is now chaired by ‘Mr Deadpan’ himself, Jack Dee.

On the panel will be Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor, stalwarts who were on the very first programme broadcast on April 11, 1972, along with Barry Cryer and Jeremy Hardy. Colin Sell, another programme stalwart, will be on the piano and fans will be hoping for a glimpse of the gorgeous Samantha, although she may well turn out to be as mythical as Mornington Crescent.
