EASTER is just around the corner and so is the arrival of the area première of Sunshine On Leith, brought to you by the Students of the Northavon School of Drama, who perform as the Northavon Youth Theatre Company.

This new, exciting musical features the music of The Proclaimers - also known as Craig and Charlie Reid - and will be staged at Thornbury’s Armstrong Hall from April 1-4 at 7.30 pm nightly, including Good Friday, plus a Saturday Matinée.

The story follows two young Soldiers: Davy and Ally, who are deployed to Afghanistan and when subjected to yet another roadside ambush both decide to leave the Army and return home to their home town of Edinburgh, or rather ‘sunny Leith’, a suburb. Ally is reunited with girlfriend Liz: Davy’s Sister and before long Davy is going out with Yvonne: a friend and fellow Nurse of Liz, so we are led through the trials of working for the NHS, finding a job once home and, with Parents Jean and Rab facing ill health and eventually an even bigger crisis of infidelity in their marriage, the strengths and weaknesses that make relationships survive or not.

We meet many interesting characters along the way, including Hibs football fans and guides working on the Royal Yacht Britannia, which is moored at Leith’s Quayside, but this is a tale of ordinary people who live life to the full, until a revelation from the past threatens to tear the family and all 3 couples apart.

As the critics said of the popular 2013 film, directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Jane Horrocks, Peter Mullan, George Mackay and Kevin Guthrie: “exuberantly funny and achingly tender”, “a soaring, big-hearted delight” and “joyous, unadulterated fun”, all of which will make you laugh and cry, but who can resist “ A no-holds barred knees up!”?

Twenty-one musical numbers are woven into the story, such as Over And Done With, Throw The ‘R’ Away and Letter From America, plus the unforgettable finale: I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), augmented by both poignant and fantastically lively dance routines, a full orchestra and even the bagpipes at one point!
