ACTORS John Bassett and Pip Mayo from Spaniel in the Works Theatre Company will be taking on the roles of the “World’s leading art critics” Bernard Beardsley and Beatrice Botticelli as the offer their complete guide to Modern Art at the Subscription Rooms on May 21.
The lively, funny show looks at the roots of Modern Art from Duchamps' urinal to Damien Hirst’s cow. On this journey audiences will visit Picasso's studio in Paris – as told by Alan Bennett, a can-can to the wildness of Les Fauves, experience the dadaist Cabaret Voltaire, have a short peep inside the dangerous mind of Oskar Kokoschka and celebrate in song both Brit and Pop Art. At the end of the show audiences have the opportunity to witness a piece of art being created in four minutes!
Writer and actor John Bassett said “The show is an enjoyable trip through a large number of different artistic styles and is suitable for audiences of all ages who want to find out more about Modern Art. It contains a lot that is very funny whilst at the same time offering an educational look at the ideas of the art world.”
So if the concept of conceptual art confuses you or you are not sure if you can tell your Dada from your Dali then come along and find out the answer to the big question “What is Art?”
