STROUD theatre company Spaniel in the Works will be bringing festive cheer to the Subscription Rooms this week with their lively, funny and irreverent retellings of the Christmas Tales of the Brothers Grimm.

From Monday, December 19 to Wednesday 21 Christmas Tales of the Brothers Grimm uses the original stories collected by the Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm and retells them with rhyme, puppets and music.

The company are going back to the original Grimms tales which are slightly darker than the recent versions.

Audiences can hear the horrible happenings of Hansel and Gretel, discover the sinister side of Cinderella and the terrible tales of Tom Thumb.

The show is like six pantomimes in one with the three actors John Bassett, Paul Southcott and Alice Vellender (and selected puppet friends) playing about 30 different roles from Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel to fish and a duck.

Writer and actor John Bassett said: “I think people will be amazed at how different the original tales are from modern interpretations. For instance there is no fairy godmother in Cinderella.

"Some tales are much darker than the way they are told now but we’re also using other tales which people might not know. The combination of good stories with our fun style of telling them makes this a great family show not to be missed.”

The show is suitable for children aged seven and above.

  • Tickets £10 and £7 with a special family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children of £ 30 available from the Sub Rooms box office on 01453 760900 or subscriptionrooms.org.uk
