Chipping Sodbury Music Society review

Chipping Sodbury Music Society

A local group from Bath, aptly named the Sulis Wind Trio, were the artists at the March concert of the Chipping Sodbury Music Society. A Divertissement by Mozart got proceedings off to a sparkling start. The minuet and trio movement was particularly graceful, the adagio played with great feeling, and the final rondo given a spirited rendition. Two modern compositions followed – a Trio by Gordon Jacob, perky and soulful in turn, with strong Gallic echoes, and a Divertimento (1956) by Mary Chandler, played with poise and commitment, bringing out the colourful sonorities to great effect.

The second half started with a Divertimento by Haydn. This happy and bouncy work was played with obvious affection by the artists. Five pieces by the Parisian Jaques Ibert followed. Typically French with joyous gaiety in the fast movements, the work received a sprightly well-sprung performance. Arrangements of four of Gershwin’s most popular songs provided a good contrast but the careful phrasing did tend to reduce the element of swing inherent in these works. Palm Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin, played with delicacy as well as verve, brought a well received concert to a successful conclusion.

The Society's next concert, "The Romantic Oboe – Schumann and his Legacy", featuring James Turnbull ~ oboe/cor anglais and Craig White ~ piano, will be in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on Tuesday, 14 April at 7.30pm. This concert is sponsored by the Countess of Munster Trust.
