The Witches of Eastwick The Bristol Hippodrome
Monday 23 - Saturday 28 March
A PACKED theatre took up the invitation to 'dance with the devil' at the Hippodrome last night.
The devil in question was, of course, 1980s pop heart throb Marti Pellow who exceeded most people's expectations in the role of the horny little devil, made famous by Jack Nicholson in the 1987 film.
His coven of witches, Ria Jones, Rebecca Thornhill and Poppy Tierney, played their roles in the rise and fall of Darryl Van Horne to perfection, shedding their Eastwick personas and revelling in their wild side before coming to their senses and understanding the truth behind the old adage 'be careful what you wish for' you might just get it.
Rachel Izen and James Graeme are also worthy of mentions as Felicia Gabriel, Chairman of the Eastwick Preservation Society and Van Horne1s nemesis, and her downtrodden husband, Clyde.
It was difficult to imagine how the visual feast that was the film could be matched on stage, and of course, ultimately, it couldn't.
The trick here, however, is to ditch your preconceptions and revel in the fabulous stylised sets, the choreogrphy, direction and superb performances by both leads and ensemble.
A magical night out, and certainly one for the ladies!
