Chipping Sodbury Music Society
Charlotte Newstead, Soprano, and Dr John Marsh, Piano, gave a wide-ranging and enjoyable concert to mark the start of the 2009/10 season.
Songs ranged from the early English composer John Dowland through Haydn, Bellini, Schumann and Richard Strauss, to George Gershwin and Jerome Kern.
In all the works the fine teamwork of singer and accompanist shone through.
The poignancy of unrequited love, a favourite theme of many composers, was portrayed with great sensitivity and, in the livelier pieces, bright tone and rhythmic security were well in evidence.
The well known popular songs including "Love Walked In" and "Make Believe" were sung with obvious enjoyment and Ivor Novello’s "We’ll Gather Lilacs" made an appropriate encore to a concert well received by an enthusiastic audience.
Our next concert will feature the Jubovski Trio (a chamber music group with a passion for the music of the Eastern European Gypsies) in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on Tuesday, November 10 at 7.30pm.
