Sleeping Beauty, Theatre Royal Bath
OH yes it is, panto season is in full swing.
And a real cracker of a family show is in store at the Theatre Royal in Bath. The annual offering of goodies and baddies, dames and damsels in distress comes with a hearty helping of sing-a-longs, slapstick and silliness all served up with fun and frolics for all the family.
Sleeping Beauty is of course the fairytale of a princess who pricks her finger on a spinning wheel after an evil fairy casts a spell on her. Beauty is supposed to meet her untimely end but her fairy godmother saves her from death and instead casts a spell which will her see fall asleep for 100 years. The princess’ only hope is a kiss from her first love, the handsome prince.
After being named Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards 2009, Gemma Bissix (Eastenders, Hollyoaks) is a brilliant bad fairy and has a never-ending supply of cackles to get the audience booing every time.
Liza Goddard is everyone’s favourite wand-wielding Fairy Godmother and pantomime stalwarts Chris Harris and Jon Monie, as the Dame and Muddles, bring comic capers galore to the stage. The duo have hilarious tricks in store with water pistols, kitchen calamities and magic mirrors.
There is the obligatory audience participation which tots and teens alike will love, musical numbers featuring pop hits from the past year and a sprinkling of Christmas magic to get us all feeling festive.
A very British tradition; this is a panto to be proud of.
